Hardly Initiated

Hardly Initiated grew from 10K to 100K followers in five months

Overview

Hardly Initiated had five episodes, just under 10,000 Instagram followers and no brand for its clips. In five months we built a short-form department. Instagram passed 100,000. TikTok went from nothing to 67,000. The account averaged 250,000 views a day.

The problem

Hardly Initiated is a podcast about men's entrepreneurship and relationships. Host Tysean Jackson sits down with entrepreneurs and divorce attorneys. The conversations were strong. The distribution was not. Five episodes were out. The YouTube channel was new. Instagram sat just under 10,000 followers. TikTok did not exist. There was no visual brand for the clips, no process for finding the moments worth cutting, and no team to run either one. Hours of good conversation stayed locked inside long-form. The Diagnosis The podcast did not have a content problem. It had an extraction problem. Every episode held clips that could travel. Nobody had a system for finding them, a look that made them recognizable, or a crew that could cut them every day. Talent alone does not publish six times a day. A machine does. So we skipped the pep talk about consistency and built the machine.

What we built

1. A look people recognize in a feed. Custom edit templates. Typography, color and motion graphics. Caption placement set for retention. Tysean describes it plainly: "He came in, he gave us a brand, he gave us a look, and actually we still use and go viral every day with that look that he provided to us." 2. Rules for what makes a clip. The Hook, Retention, Reward framework. Every clip gets tagged against ten psychological triggers, including curiosity gap, loss aversion, status signaling, social proof and contrarian insight. Every edit cuts pauses and filler. Every clip ends on one of four reward structures: question to answer, open loop to closed, problem to solution, or point to rationale. 3. A crew that runs without us. An Asana workflow from intake to publish. A playbook any trained assistant can follow. Two virtual assistants cutting clips and one editor holding the brand standard. Fourteen days from hire to full productivity. Three posts a day on Instagram and three on TikTok.

The result

Instagram grew from just under 10,000 to 100,000 followers in five months. TikTok launched from zero and reached 67,000. The account averaged 250,000 views a day. Three or more clips a week cleared a million views. The system produced 42 posts a week across Instagram and TikTok, and the playbook scales to 63 once YouTube Shorts joins the rotation. YouTube reached 500K subscribers. The host said it better than we can. "When he first came in we were at somewhere just under 10,000 followers, and yesterday we just hit a hundred thousand followers on Instagram." What the Numbers Do Not Say The follower, view and clip figures come from the client's own platform analytics at the close of the build. We did not run paid media on this account. The 500K YouTube figure is a result of the whole channel, not only the clips we cut. The Principle The best marketing builds capability, not dependency. If the client cannot run the system without you, you built a retainer, not a system. Build the machine so well that they stop needing you. Next Read the Vaunt case study next.
